That’s because connection isn’t about what you say—it’s about how their brain reacts to you.
Not just what they say, but everything about them. Ever notice how the people you felt most comfortable with in the past just seem to be on your level? That’s no coincidence, when you mirror people, what happens is your brain and their brain aligns. This alignment creates a deep bond and makes them lean into you. That’s when they instantly feel like they’ve known you their entire life.
We go in-depth in the book with all the different ways to mirror someone, but this week try it out for yourself.
Your action step: Go to a cafe and when you meet your barista copy their energy levels, just for a few sentences and just notice the subtle shift as they pay attention to you differently to what you’re normally used to.
In the book we give you several other methods of mirroring, but this is one of the most powerful.
Matt S: I was so skeptical at first, and I felt like a complete idiot, I though the lady behind the counter was going to think I was mocking her, instead I was shocked, she just look at me and we started having a long conversation, I felt od because the line behind us started queuing up and I didn’t want to hold everyone up.
Ever notice that the most addictive TV shows end on a high? They leave you all week with questions about what’s going to happen in the next episode. Well conversations are the same, the feeling of hanging a connection with someone new is addictive, however we want to remember to eject and leave them wanting more. There’s nothing worse when the conversation starts dying down and your feet feel like there in quicksand and you wanna leave but you can’t seem to.
In Chapter 4 of the Make Friends Easily Book – we go in more depth of the emotional rollercoaster and you learn to be a master at leaving them wanting more, to the point where they ask you to hang out.
Your action step: Notice when the conversation is going up the rollerocaster and when it’s starting to dip, have you eject button ready and leave the conversation. You’ll watch their face as they wish you stayed longer.
Suzie B – I met this a lovely lady at a networking event, the conversation was going so well and I felt in my gut that it was at it’s high point and then I politely excused myself, and turned around to me asking me “hey it’s been lovely talking, such a shame you got to go, we should catch up for coffee!” wow I was completely blown away!
This is something many people struggle with, they fall into logical land, when we talk logic that’s when we get people start to switch off, because it reminds us of work. People view socialising as a way to escape, escape their jobs, their reality and boring life. That is why concerts, bars, netflix, beaches, holidays where people love to spend their time. It’s all about escaping reality and you want to be a master of creating fun imaginary lands of conversation.
Your action step: Next time your in a conversation ask them “What are are your top 3 things you like about [area they are interested in]…. Based of their response follow up with … “Now Imagine if [insert a cool scenario of you and them in it]
Don’t worry if you can’t do it properly, we go in depth in the book on how to do that.
Shawn P – Talk about creating an instant connection, I couldn’t believe it when I asked this guy in the book store what his favourite book was and then I said “Imagine if your life turn into a story from any book, what book would you choose! … He wouldn’t stop talking! I can’t believe it – We caught up the next week for coffee. My social life has never been the same after this book!
